Good to have a store like this around
La Jolla Music, located at 7442 Girard Ave. in La Jolla is my kind of music store. You don't see too many harps or beautiful old instruments lounging around any music store these days. They certainly have a great variety of instruments there. The people working there are very friendly and knowledgable. I brought in my daughter's old clarinet to get re-corked and it was very painless. Brought it in, got a receipt, and it was ready to be picked on the day promised. When my daughter tried it out it worked perfectly well.
This store has been here for over a generation, it is well established and is situated in a very nice area of town. They have a very good selection of instruments that some other music stores just don't have and they also have on hand a good selection of sheet music. Overall I think that this is one of the better music stores around.

The best of the bunch
The Filippi's Pizza Grotto downtown on India Street is definitely the best of the Filippi's in San Diego. I believe it's the original one(?). I'll always remember the first time I walked in there, it reminded me of an Italian grocery store back east in New York when I was a kid. The hanging hams, the hanging cheeses, the dried salt cod in the wooden crates, canned imported tomato pastes, and all sorts of olive oils...
Anyway, enough reminiscing. This restaurant obviously has the ambiance. And the food is so consistently good, I've been coming here for almost 25 years, and its taste and quality has never strayed or wavered. Their pizzas here are the best of any other Filippi's, especially the vegetarian, no one comes close! The pastas are delicious, the sauces are so right on, all the time! One thing I'll mention: I wish they had more selection on their wine list, but, I'm not complaining. Why rock the boat?
Going back to the grocery store, I do love the cookies they sell by the pound behind the counter. Whenever we eat there, I'll usually get a pound or two of those delicious cookies to bring home. I don't think any other Filippi's in San Diego sells the stuff they do here. With the consistent great sauces, food, and the grocery store, this is the best of the bunch.

The best donuts
T K Donuts, at 3095 Clairemont Drive is, in my humble opinion, the best donuts in San Diego. Their donuts are, obviously, made fresh every morning, and you can taste it.
The store itself is very plain, maybe a bit old, I for one can call it "charm". I actually do not drink coffee so I cannot tell you anything about how their coffee tastes, but I certainly can smell it, and it smells just wonderful! Their display showcases a large assortment of doughnuts - glazed, sugar, plain, chocolate and rainbow sprinkled, bavarian creme - as well as danishes, twirlers, and other pastries. Every donut I've had here is what the standard of a "donut" should be - just the right sweetness, the perfect texture, and the right taste.
In terms of value, where it is a function of quality and quantity, T K Donuts comes through with flying colors. Their donuts are generously portioned, so there's a lot of deliciousness. You really get your money's worth. I think everyone in that neighborhood is aware of that. That's probably why they run out of donuts so early!

Pricey and memorable
Morton's Steakhouse, located downtown San Diego on J Street is a premiere upper crust restaurant thats serves everything a la carte. The food was excellent, the service was also excellent, and the ambiance was excellent.
I took my daughter there for her birthday since she loves steak. I made reservations informing them of that, and when our family arrived, they had a custom menu made for her with "Happy Birthday (her name)" on it. That was a nice touch. Before ordering, the waiter carted out everything on the menu - showing us each cut of steak and a live 2-pound lobster (well, because lobster was on the menu too).
We all had steaks, and they were excellent. The sides, though a la carte and pricey, were very generous. My wife and I shared a bottle of Petie Sirah, which was a perfect pairing with our steaks. After dinner my daughter was presented her little birthday cake dessert. Again, nice touch!
All in all, it was a very memorable dinner because it was my daughter's birthday, but I told her next time, I'd use the money to get a plane ticket to go to Hawaii. She decidedly agreed.

Covers almost everything
Blick's on India Street in Little Italy has pretty much everything an artist would need. For commercial and fine artists alike, to designers to architects, the store has a vast list of supplies.
As a painter they have virtually everything I've ever needed or wanted - from Windsor & Newton Series 7 brushes to vermillion guoaches, permalba to portfolios. It's the only place in San Diego I know that carried the Schaedler Precision Rule set designed by Taro Yamashita. That's where I purchased mine years ago, but sorry, I didn't notice if they still carried it.. . I wouldn't be surprised if they do.
If I needed spray mount, poster board etc., for my kids' school projects, I'd just come here first because I know it would be one-stop shopping. And sometimes we'd run into that peculiar little something that other places probably wouldn't carry to make their projects all the more special.
The store is very bright and well laid out, everything is organized for similar needs, and the service is very helpful.
I would suggest to go when they have a sale, and stock up on supplies. That's the one good thing about art supplies, they really don't go bad on you... oil paints, linseed oils, turpentines, brushes, etc.
