blowupyourblog2So we said we were going to share the challenges… here is a funny one… It was not so funny about 24 hours ago to me tho. I had set up the servers, set up the blog, set up the databases, etc… Everything was going swimmingly fine for the last 5 days and then magically the blog stopped working at about 1 in the morning. I found this out courtesy of a middle of the night call from Jon… uuuuh ooooh big problem.

So I go into the server…there is a new version of the database software on the server…hmmm… thats new, I wonder how that got there? So I pick up the phone and I am talking to the tech support guys at around 2 in the morning and we are poking around and they say “Someone is in your server loading a new version of database software as we speak.” Turns out the programming development team decided to do some stuff and not alert me ahead of time and was unaware that this new version of software did not play nicely with the blog.

So I got the programmers on the line, I was flipping out. We eventually got everything squared away in about 20 minutes. So the lesson here is to always make sure the left hand knows what the right hand is doing and be very careful when changing software versions. It helps you keep your hair.

    Yo Rodney,

Interesting horror story, there. dude! Nothing is safe when the programmers are at work…
It’s great that you were on top of the situation right away and got it resolved quickly. You
just never know when a seemingly innocent change to software running on a web server
    will turn your world upside-down.

I’ve had my share of dealing with weird server configurations and keeping systems up and
running in spite of everything from hackers to power outages to software changes that
    should have helped but didn’t.

    Keep up the good work!
