We’ve recently made some exciting improvements to our search algorithm…blah blah blah…

In case we lost you at algorithm, basically, that’s tech talk for we’ve improved how the search runs so that it retrieves the most accurate business results.

We’ve been working on this for a while now, so we’re really excited to have it go live.  Now, the new and improved search will bring up the most accurate results for even the most obscure multiple word searches!

For example, say you’re looking for an Irish Pub to celebrate the upcoming holiday.  Before, your search for Irish Pub may have resulted in anything Irish OR Pub related.  But now, you should only get results that are truly Irish Pubs.

Try a combo word search that will really make the algorithm work for ya; maybe a car dealer or nail salon?  Or how about a water distributor…to help you replenish your fluids after an evening at the Irish Pub?

Try it out - we dare you to try to stump the system!

Paint the town… GREEN?

leprechaun.jpgLeprechauns, shamrocks and a pot of gold are all somewhat synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day…

But for most Americans, the most popular way to celebrate this holiday is with beer…and green beer when possible!  It’s the one day out of the year where people actually seek out green foods and beverages - from green bagels to green brews!

So where will you be celebrating this year?

Unfortunately, the official holiday falls on a Monday, but I’m sure you’ll find many willing to celebrate early over the weekend.  And if you’re looking for a destination, check out MojoPages.com to find a popular watering hole or Irish pub in your area!

And if you’ve got your finger on the pulse of your town’s Irish festivities, be sure to let your neighbors know!  Remember, you don’t have to be Irish to paint the town GREEN this St. Patrick’s Day!  Whether you choose to celebrate this weekend or on the official date - Monday, March 17th - we wish you a fun and safe St. Patty’s Day!

So get out your green getup and get into the spirit and may the luck o’ the Irish be with each and everyone of you!

Now that the days will be longer and the nights a little warmer, it’s the perfect opportunity to re-acquaint yourself with your hometown…

Why not check out a neighborhood park? Or maybe visit a local museum? You can always try out the nearby hiking trail! To learn more about the sites and attractions in your area, just check out MojoPages.com!

And if you’re an expert on your city, be sure to share your tips for the local hotspots and lesser-known destinations with your neighbors and visitors, so we can all have a chance to experience everything your city has to offer!

Numero Uno

There are definitely some perks that come with being Number 1 on MojoPages. And by Number 1, we mean the Firsts…like the First member ever to review a business!

You were the first to find the business (at least on MojoPages) and you were the first to help others by writing a review. And for being our first, we think you should be rewarded accordingly… with a little extra recognition and even a little extra Mojo!

We know that as more and more reviews are written for a business on MojoPages, the older ones get pushed to the end to make room for more recent reviews at the top of the list. But we haven’t forgotten about our beloved reviewer who was there in the beginning…

We like trendsetters and don’t want them to get lost at the end, so we acknowledge the first member to write a review with their photo and name at the top of the list.

But that’s not all… the first person to review a business receives double the Mojo. That’s two points instead of the usual one - they can really add up, so it’s a great way to earn points!

So get out there and review already! A little limelight and some extra Mojo…Why wouldn’t you want to be Numero Uno?

San Diego Fire Recovery Group Whether you live in Southern California or not you most likely heard about the recent wildfires that raged through much of Southern California. It has been a tough a couple of weeks, the first week many families were evacuated from their home and left not knowing what would be there when the returned. Many wondering if they had taken the most important “things” from their home many realizing they had forgotten some treasured item and then hoping that it would be there when they returned. For most it was a terrible few hours and an uncomfortable few days but they returned home to dirty but spared homes. Unfortunately for many their return was heartbreaking, they returned to find their homes and their treasures nothing but ashes.

Now it’s time to rebuild both their homes and their lives. Fortunately we live in place where strangers are willing to help, to lend an emotional hand as well as a physical hand and thus the rebuilding begins. Many will come to find that Mojopages can actually help them in the rebuilding process. We are place where groups can come together and discuss topics such as Insurance claims, or maybe Fire Department response times or any other topic that they may choose. We provide a place to find a good contractor, or ask for help in finding an architect. We can provide a place to ask for recommendations, a place so share stories and photos about the rebuilding process and place to find others than may have already walked down that road.

We hope that you will join our San Diego Fire Recovery Community Resources group and share your thoughts and ideas. I have also created a group call Quilts for Kids and I’m looking for others who would like to help in making quilts for the kids who lost everything in the fire. While a quilt is a “material” item it’s something that can add a little comfort to a child’s day when they may just need a little hug. The moms and the dads are going to busy replacing the day to day living needs so won’t you join me in giving the kids a little something to start over with as well. If you are interested in helping with this project please email me from within MojoPages. Thanks!

It has been a while since we have posted here to keep people updated as to what has happening here at mojopages. We have made literally hundreds of changes since we last updated our users here on the blog.We have been working very very hard behind the scenes. Some of the changes are obvious; some of the changes are under the hood.

We have done extensive usability testing with users and have implemented navigational changes that make the site easier to use. Thanks for all of the users that have been giving us feedback.

We have also made improvements to our groups feature and it keeps getting better.

Our community has continued to grow and our users are great! They have continued to add reviews, have become more active and are growing the community. Thanks to all of our users, we really appreciate you.

Finally Coming Up For Air

I wanted to take this time to reach out to our members and blog readers. I was buried under the hood and not communicating enough here on the blog. We have been swamped making a lot of changes and improvements to the mojopages site. Some of these changes are very obvious visually, some are not so obvious.

We have been doing a lot of work under the hood that is not totally visible. Finding an efficient way to search, sort and present relevant results for over 15 Million business records is no easy task. The point of all this work is to make the site more effective and effecient for our users. Better search results, better communication tools, easier to use…

We have been doing a lot of testing of different ways to make the site better for our users. feel free to reach out if you have questions. And mucho thanks to all of our users that are helping to make mojopages better. Thanks for your patience during this process. It is greatly apreciated.

I just happened to be writing a review about San Diego Barbers… actually Solana Beach Barbers tonight and I had a flash of an idea… i was talking with some buddies of mine about how my dad used to take me to the local barber shop to get a haircut and i always enjoyed the experience. Everyone seemed to kind of know everyone and no one was a stranger… everyone talked to everyone. This goes back to my youth in the midwest.

Then when i was in my 20’s and living in Kansas City a friend recommended a local barber shop where i could get a real flatop (i loved that style for years because no one wore them). I was fortunate enough to meet Ewing Kaufman there (owner of the Kansas City Royals and Billionaire). He sat next to me, talked to everyone like one of the guys and waited for a chair to open just like everyone else. Again… i thought of my youth and loved that feeling of a local barber shop.

Then I moved to san diego and could never find that same kind of old school barber shop. I hunted for a long time and was lucky enough to stumble across a great local barber shop right on the 101 in Solana Beach (i have been a regular there for a few years, ask for Dave). I was telling some friends the other night about how i got the old school barber treatment: hot towel on the face, straight edged razor shave and they were looking at me in disbelief. They all said.. you can still get those?… i am going to go there and get one too, that sounds so cool.

So here is my flash of an idea: Sometimes people don’t even know they want something until you tell them about it and share the experience you had with a business. So sharing new experiences with your network of friends really helps people out and… just maybey… takes them back to their youth. ;)
