Yoko's Dance and Performing Arts Academy has been one of the best things for my family. When my daughter started dancing there, it gave her something to look forward to. When she started competing, it gave her focus, in her academic studies, as well as dance. Yoko expects her dance student to perform well scholastically, as well as in the dance studio. The atmosphere at the studio echoes what we, as parents, teach at home - enjoy what you do, dedicate yourself to it, and do it to the best of your ability. My daughter has matured by learning that you can't always do or get everything you want, just because you want it or think you deserve it. Sometimes different parts of life overlap and you have to make a choice. These are lessons that will always be present, whether they involve dancing or not.
My daughter is not on an A team, but that hardly matters. She receives worthwhile instruction at Yoko's from dedicated teachers. The fact that some of her teachers are not much older than her is irrelevant. In fact, I think it's great. It allows me to remind my daughter how to show respect for all ages. And I'm sure that the teenage teachers are learning valuable life skills as well, such as patience, organizational skills, and how to deal will a variety of personalities in a professional manner.
I expect that my daughter will continue to improve her dancing, as she already has in just a few short years. And if she chooses to continue competing, I expect that she will be placed on teams according to her skills. I can't imagine why Yoko would sabotage her own studio by creating teams using any basis except skill level. That doesn't make sense, and the awards and accolades the studio earns certainly would indicate that Yoko knows what she's doing. She produces skilled, professional, disciplined, courteous dancers.
