Usually a 'hole-in-the-wall' falls into one of two categories - really poor, or truly authentic. Thankfully, this restaurant is the latter, and for the lack of location and glamour, it makes up for in genuinely amazing Japanese cuisine at an extremely affordable price. My date and I each ordered separate combination plates, and were pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of the meal (something you would never guess from the outer appearance of the place!). The combination plates come as a three course meal, with the first course being a salad with a tangy sauce, followed by a pleasant miso soup. Both of these were left nothing to desire, and particularly the tangy sauce on the salad added a great touch to an otherwise simple green salad. For the final course, we were surprised by the sheer amount of food that arrived in front of us! The presentation and quality of this course was on par (maybe even better) than many 20 or 30 dollar meals I have had, at a 10 dollar ...

I tried out this place last night and it the food was amazing. Its the epitome of a hole in the wall. Its located in this small shopping center on miramar road, so it was a bit difficult to find, but it was well worth it. For $20, we were able to afford an extremely filling meal for two with 6 california rolls, teryaki chicken, teryaki beef, steamed rice, fish, soup, and salad. HIGHLY recommended.‎

For $20.60, here is the list of food that fed me and my gf: gyozo, beef teryaki, tempura, sashimi, salmon roll, california roll, rice. Everything came in 4 to go boxes (2 big and 2 small), and the food was delicious. Sashimi was fresh, beef teryaki was cooked "medium" (she asked me how I liked it cooked), the flakes on the tempura is the thin kind which is much better than just flour paste. Overall, excellent value and exceptional food. I was visiting and found this place on google. I said I must write an excellent review for the restaurant because it deserves it! BTW, I eat Japanese once a week so please keep that in mind when reading this review. Overall, I highly recommend this place. I will be sure to come back when I visit San Diego again. Lastly, this place is tiny and can be difficult to find, make sure you keep your eye out for it.‎

If you're looking for a place with authenticity in their Japanese food besides California roll, then Umenoya is the place to be. Great service and great food. Definitely recommend you go to try some great food.
