The movie experience is excellent. The food is good. The chairs are comfy. We love the wait staff, Fred & the woman at the ticket counter. You get what you give. For our family, it doesn't matter what the movie is. We just want the Commodore experience!‎

My wife and I have been going to the Commodore Theatre for years. We had not been in a while but we were able to go this past weekend to see Sherlock Holmes. The food was great but we could not see the movie very well because the employees could not turn down the lights. I have never been to the movies when the lights could not be turned down all the way. I asked our waiter and he told me the he did not know how to turn down the ceiling lights and the owner was not there to do it. I guess the owner came in close to the end of the movie because the lights went down. Very annoying! Was not offered anything due to the problem.‎

This is a novelty only. After that you get tired of the owners rules and regulations.You can't use a credit card for this, have to be there at a certain time or they will give your seat away, extra charges for using a credit card, have to order before this time......on & on & on....I understand some rules but they seem excessive.They certainly don't make you feel like they appreciate your business more like you are a burden. The food is expensive and nothing to write home about. The location is questionable also. I do not feel safe going or coming and certainly not parking in the dimly lit parking areas. Not a great section of town even though it has gotten better in recent years.And the shop owners are trying hard. One thing that I do enjoy when I go is the huge screen and the great sound system.‎

Not once have I had a guest that has visited our favorite movie experience and failed to have a good time. The best kept secret in hosting guests resides in the heart of downtown Porstmouth, VA. From Hawaii to Italy all our guests have remarked about the uniqueness of the experience. My family frequent the Commodore Theater and find it a most pleasureable change of pace, The clientele is cordial and the service can be lengthy at times but more than worth the wait - the movie may begin shortly after you're served if you're lucky. It's really a cool place to enjoy a light fun meal, drinks and an incredible movie. Would not be surprised to see more businesses using this venue for a moral booster - we do!‎

The Commodore is one of the few surviving "retro" movietheaters that maintained the original elegance and wonder of the original structure (murals on the walls, balcony seating, etc.), but also managed integration of state of the art ...
