Ft. Sumter is an amazing site to see and take your children to. It is actually about 3 miles off the coast line of the Charleston Harbor. It is run by the state park system. Tours go at least twice a day and sometimes more (depending on the tourist season). Expect about 3 hours for your tour -- start to finish. You go by boar to the fort and that takes 45 min. to 1 hour. Then you have an hour stay on the fort. There is a museum to explore and you can follow a tour guide or explore on your own. Then, allow 45 min. for your ride back. This is an amazing place to visit for Civil War history. A wonderful field trip for children. The only con is that it is expensive. You can pull up their website for current prices. However, for the boat ride and experience I would still not hesitate to go again.
