The Go-to Pharmacy
I've discovered that while there a lots of chain drugstore locations in Santa Clara County, there are basically only a few companies that own them all and they are all pretty much the same. A couple of recent experiences have led me to realize how poorer we are being made by our chainstore mentality.
The first was when I attempted to buy an old handcream that I really like to use after working on the car or in the yard. I tried to find it at the local chain drugstore only to be told that it was no longer available. "Can it be special ordered?" I asked. "No," came the response at not one but three different chains. Finally, I called Silicon Valley Pharmacy and was told that not only would they special order the item, but that it would arrive from Kansas City in about five days and that they would call me when it arrived!
Second, I was prescribed a medication that the doctor told me was not commercially available and had to be made by the pharmacist. Again I tried the chain drugstore down the street and again I was told that they could not provide the medication. I tried the other chains with the same results. However this time, the pharmacist at the last place I called suggested that I try Silicon Valley Pharmacy.
It turned out that the medication was a special injectable medication that had to be made in a cleanroom and that Silicon Valley Pharmacy was one of a few non-hospital pharmacies in the state that had this capability. To top that, I discovered that the medication was not ideal for me. The pharmacists at Silicon Valley Pharmacy worked closely with my doctor to fine tune the ingredients and dosage resulting in me having excellent results without side effects. It turns out that the pharmacy specializes in custom prescriptions as there are a lot of people like me out there who have discovered that commercially available cures are not the best solutions.
Remember that bigger is not better. Silicon Valley Pharmacy is a shining example.
