I didn't know what to expect from this museum, I thought it would be lots of figures, facts and maybe a caboose or two. Instead it's a museum full of miniature models of mountains and tracks with small trains riding the tracks. The details are amazing and you can see everything with raised platforms. Each model has a person there to explain about the particular train or the area the model is representing. There is an area for children to play and you can even rent an area for parties or events.

The entrance is very affordable and free for San Diego residents on the first Tuesday of every month. No matter if you're big or small, those miniatures fill you with wonder and amazement. A very fun museum!

My boys LOVED going to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. They do not ask to go as much now that they are four and a half, but around the time they were two and a half until they were about three and a half they asked to go to the Railroad Museum almost every day.

The Museum is on the small side, but there are miles and miles of tracks that have trains running by every few seconds. My boys loved to look at all of the cars and trucks on the layouts, they really enjoyed looking at all of the scenes.

The Railroad museum also has a small gift shop, and a small area with Thomas the Trains fro the kids to play with.

It is totally worth a family membership if you have train crazy kids.

My twin boys used to love going to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum when they were two and three years old. Now that they are four and a half, they do not ask to go quite as much as they used to, but when we do go they still have a lot of fun. The museum is a little bit small and kind of hard to find. You have to enter through the Museum of Photographic Arts and go down a flight of stairs to the basement . Once you go there once, though, it is no trouble at all. There are dozens of different displays to see, and one room where there are a couple of that kids can control themselves. They have been building an exhibit in the loft that we be really cool when it is done. It is a scale model of a famous railroad grade called the loop East of Bakersfield. We will definitely make another visit to see that when it is done. The family membership is a really good value, and I would highly recommend this to anyone with a two or three year old.

GREAT GIFT SHOP AS WELL

This museum has lots of model trains. They also have some room for small kids to play with Thomas the tank engine toys. It will be hard to convince your kids to leave.
