I have a relative living there and if our family, as dysfunctional as it is, had the money, or if she took better care of herself, no this would not be the idea place to end up. Nursing homes, just the thought of them is a place no one wants to go to. But when you cannot stay by yourself and family cannot take care of you, what choice do you have? I was not happy to see my relation there, but I remembered where she came from and this place was a vast improvement. She gets three meals a day. It may not be the food she is accustomed to, but it is better than the fast food she was eating most of the time.
One big issue I have with most medical facilities is that you get what you pay for. She needs a lot more medical stuff done, but there is no money for it. So her body is maintained and symptoms treated as they arise.
I don't know if the incoming Obama administration will address this apsect of medical care but most are indequate and again it comes down to you get what you are able to pay for. From the nursing facilities to the staff and residents/patients. Everyone seems depressed and seem to be there because there is no place else to go. In observing the medical situation in other parts of the world, this nursing home would seem like the Taj Mahal to some folks. So its all relative ... no pun intended.
