Avoid at all times. Bring your own food!
Relish Caterers is responsible for providing food for Wollman Rink's cafeteria, one of NYC's must do destinations especially with children. But beware! Any fresh salads and sandwiches that might be on offer run out very early and are not replenished leaving the later lunch comers with the unacceptable selection of fast food items such as chicken nuggets, corn chips and plastic cheese (what is this stuff?), pizza made with a processed tomato base and the dreaded hot dog. It is just not acceptable to serve this sort of food that is now not even seen in many of the city's school cafeterias and ironically it is easier and more energy efficient to prepare fresh food. Even if the kids might be asking for this kind of muck, what may I ask do the parents eat? One friend was recently sick for 2 days after eating a hot dog at the rink. In a group of five it made more sense to grab a bite there rather than find a cafe, so they became part of the captive audience, but paid a price. Even though hot dogs are cooked before heated and served it is obviously possible to get a bad one. Dad had the hot dog, the rest got off lightly. The saddening thing was that on reporting the incident Relish Caterers seemed less inclined to take on the information and go through the motions speaking to their kitchen and checking hygiene standards than they were to pass back the responsibility to the customer saying they were probably suffering from a stomach virus or the flu. I hope one day they take these sorts of complaints seriously and that they can lift their food quality standards at the rink. After all, for a company to brag about its corporate and private clients as it does on its website, quite frankly I don't know where they get off providing the level of catering for such a well known and public destination such as the Wollman Rink. Even the most common of us enjoy a decent and healthy feed!
