Ralph's is an ADA scofflaw
It's a lovely store. The plant is clean and well-maintained, employees are knowledgeable, courteous and helpful, and there is a wide selection of quality merchandise at competitive prices. But if you are in a wheelchair you are not welcome here. The message is clear and unmistakable.
Despite the proximity of the Veterans Home and other retirement facilities nearby, empty grocery carts are routinely stored so as to block safe sidewalk access by wheelchairs. In order to enter the store, disabled shoppers must leave the sidewalk and risk being struck by a car. The only alternative is to laterally negotiate a steep driveway, risking a tipover into the street.
Inside the store. point-of-sale displays are placed without any consideration of ADA requirements whatsoever. Racks displaying special items are attached along the bottom of the deli cases, protruding into the aisle to the extent that deli merchandise is simply not accessible from a wheelchair.
Store aisles are wide - obviously designed with ADA requirements in mind - but are routinely cluttered with merchandise pallets, often impassable in a wheelchair.
It is almost 20 years since enactment of the ADA, and although it I sometimes burdensome, most businesses have adapted and brought their facilities into compliance.
No so this Ralph??????s. If you??????re in a wheelchair you??????d best shop somewhere else.
