I highly recommend Rakestraw Books in Danville. I am an out-of-state customer who relies on them as well as the local bookstores in my area. The owner, Michael Barnard, is one of the best and most resourceful booksellers I know. He's gotten me anything I've ever needed and has recommended books to me that I now cherish and pass on to others. His service and commitment is second to none in the industry. Rakestraw sponsors countless events throughout the year; this is more than a bookstore -- it is a community institution and a treasure.‎

So many small independent bookstores have disappeared but Danville's Rakestraw Books is not only surviving, but also doing well. They always have great book recommendations and terrific authors visiting. And attending an author event there is so much better than driving into SF since you actually get to meet the author in a more intimate setting. I always like to bring friends and make a night out in downtown Danville.‎
