Cool neighborhood treasure by R C. at InsiderPages
Built in 1911, this is the oldest surviving movie theater in New Orleans, and the only single screen theater left in Louisiana. The theater is featured in Walker Percy's novel The Movie Goer and also in Toole's Confederacy of Dunces. Its been completely renovated and modernized with a big screen, good concessions, comfortable seating, etc. Its tucked in the middle of the Uptown neighborhood in a residential section == a monument to one of the best features of New Orleans: mixed use construction! It tends to show artsy films but it also has some blockbuster types. The owner, Rene, is a local historian and is usually found in the lobby with a bow-tie, ready to answer questions. The lobby's old historic photos of neighborhood NOLA theaters are also cool. This is a fantastic theater.
