Pokez
Pokez is the nickname of Alfonso Reyes and his brother Rafael whom along with his father started this family run eatery back in 1994. It's a funky cool Mexican place. I do not know if the atmosphere and attitude make the food taste better or the food makes the atmosphere better, but whatever it is this is my favorite taco shop in town.

Here is why. It's the first place I've seen that breaks down stereotypes, by using the same medium and modern style that every other hip downtown eatery uses for its decor. Urban hip-hop and post low-rider pop. Home grown food (being green and supporting local suppliers), local artisans on the wall (donated and not for sale.), low key San Diego attitude, and a collegiate esprit d'corp. Its got freshman named smith waiting tables (multicultural), and Quetzalcoatl on a skateboard as a logo. Come on, I dare you to find another Mexican restaurant in town that can laugh at itself and be itself so well.

The food is good, really good. The vibe is great, in a kid to granddad way. It's got tasty and filling vegetarian and vegan plates. The Jukebox plays the DK's. On weekends it is open to 3am. Enough said, Pokez gets my 5 stars.

Great Mexican Restaurant!
This place is a very artistic and eclectic. The food is delicious and some of the workers are great. I totally fell in love with this place when i first walked in. I loved the whole vibe it gave me. All the murals and artwork in the restaurant really made it unique and it really fit into the downtown scene. The service most of the time is good but it does take a while for food to come out. However, you can't really complain because it is great food at a great price. On a Saturday night it is always packed and people are waiting just to get a table. The servers are all unique but their are a few who are just plain rude or unresponsive. Other than that the quality of the food and presentation is great. I definitely recommend it.

This is a different place. Many complain about the service, but I think most people are just scared of their waiters, who flat out don't care (or have time) for your feedback on their service. Maybes its the murals of tattoos on their bodies, but that only adds to it. This is the best mexican food (old town mexi is 2nd place), especially is you are looking for vegetarian items.
Pros: Best food. Kickass jukebox. When a server is having a good day you might just get a story that makes your day
Cons: Paying at the counter is frustrating when you are ready to leave. Kitchen is small and gets slammed, and sometimes servers have a bad day.
