i love the guys at pintchik. they are helpful (i've heard stories of unhelpfulness, but it seems to all be about one grumpy dude), friendly, and incredibly well-stocked. although they don't have lumber, they have just about everything else you could need in a hardware store - if you don't see it on the shelves, it could be in the large downstairs section that you need an employee to enter. just ask and they'll bring you down. it feels like some weird reverse VIP area with plumbing elbows and pvc. i have also had a good experience with them ordering pegboard for me, and also once or twice they've let an employee leave to help me carry large items to my house (a few blocks away). helpful, helpful.

I've been coming here for about 10 years and it was definitely better when I first started coming here.
The selection is worse for one: at one point the store was the size of about 6 storefronts. I would say it's down to about 4 now.
But I would say the biggest problem is that 1/2 the store is locked away in cases of one kind or another--screws, tools, all the plumbing supplies--and the staff basically shuttles from case to case unlocking them with an exasperated look on their faces.
As a result as others have noted it's really hard to get someone's attention.
It's still the best place in the neighborhood to buy paint, but I try to get other stuff elsewhere.

I've been shopping at Pintchik since 1995 and I'm now putting together my fourth apartment with their help. Though it usually takes a minute or two to find a salesperson to ask a question, once I do they spend as much time as I need to tell me whatever it is I need to know, from mounting shelves on dry wall to what kind of paint to get.
