My favourite place to eat in Charleston!
Relaxed atmosphere. The food is fantastic and prices are inline with other fine Charleston dining. My wife and I have made it our traditional anniversary night out!

Worth every penny!
We made reservations for four and when we arrived we were seated right away near the bar. Our server was phenomenal and knew what she was talking about. We didn't know what everything on the menu was so we asked and she didn't act snooty or rude about it. She made recommendations and was spot on every time. The wine list is exceptional and we were very pleased with our selection. I had a peach fizz from the bar. It was one of the best cocktails I've ever been served. Not too sweet, stout or weak. Just perfect. The tuna appetizer was a little small, but the taste was way too good not to try. It was prepared two ways and each was perfect.

Our meals were served with perfect timing and each of us enjoyed what we ordered. The chef's special was sword fish and it was cooked just right and the accompanying sauce was also just right. I tried the scallops which were large and moist.

The portions are perfect. I like being satisfied without having too much food left over. The atmosphere was great. Not too noisy. It is perfect for friends going out for the night or a romantic evening with a date.

I would also suggest trying the coffee after your meal. Like any restaurant of this caliber, the coffee is very fine. I regret that we did not get dessert, we were just way too full at the end of the meal. I highly suggest going to this restaurant whenever you get the chance!

Wonderful Restaurant with great service
My wife and I live in Houston and traveled to the Charleston recently for a short vacation. We are accustomed to top quality restaurants and the Peninsula definately rates at the top of the food chain. I had scallops which were cooked perfectly and my wife had the fish special of the day and it was also excellent. We stayed in the adjoining hottel (Planters Inn) and also stopped in one night just for desert. The banana pudding was not what my mom used to make (it was much better) and the giant coconut cake was killer.

We ordered a Cliff Lede 2005 cabernet and the sommelier came to the table to decant it for us. He was very pleasant and knowledgeable. They keep their red wine at the proper temperature and the prices were very reasonable. We paid $65 for the wine and at the liquor store it is $50 ( a very fair price).

Our waiter was Robert and I don't know if we got the best waiter in the restaurant but he definately made us feel welcome and was very attentive. I highly recommend the Peninsula Grill

Excellent food, just go.
My wife and I had dinner at the Peninsula on Saturday 3/10/07 and thought it was excellent. The staff was pleasant, knowledgable and attentive. For a total $150 bill (including tax & tip) we had two cocktails, two appetizers, two entrees (I had the Tile fish special) and a piece of coconut cake to go. It was all excellent and while I don't particularly like cake, it was just fine. The bar is noisy but it was filled with kids (twenty-somethings) who should probably have been at a beer joint. We have no connection with this company (they own the Planter's Inn, and other hotels and other restaurants). We intend to go back, soon, hoping that those who don't care for it won't be there. If you appreciate a team that tries hard and delivers a fairly high standard of service and cuisine, just go. You won't regret it. If you go to restaurants expecting to be disappointed, perhaps you should stay home.

Pros: Creative menu; well prepared; good value; NOT a chain franchise restaurant.

Very uncomfortable service
We came in for desserts and after dinner drinks after dining at another restaurant in Charleston. Being highly recommended, we expected exemplory service and the wonderful food and desserts that we had heard so much about. Working in the industry, we know what to look for and expect only the best. We arrived at the bar and ordered some dessert and high priced champagne. Upon dining at the bar, we DID NOT expect to hear about the bartenders previous night of drinking and partying. We could tell before we heard her story that she had been on an all night bender...dropping glasses, snipping like she had done illegal substances the night before, with unkept hair and a sloppy apparance. Needless to say, we couldn't relax as she whirled around the tiny bar and made our dining experience uncomforable. A 4-star restaurant should be an atmosphere of relaxation as you should be able to enjoy your $50 dollar desserts without feeling rushed or uneasy. Unfortunately the bartender ruined the whole image of the restaurant for us. After all, that is the first impression you get when you first walk through the door...
