Bad School Steer Clear!
I attended OMOS from kindergarten through the 8th grade and graduated around 15 years ago. My main issues are: 1) Bullying. While a student at the school, the principal disciplined by fear. She often said, "I have been known to pick up an 8th grader by the neck with one hand". I don't believe this was an appropriate example of how to maintain control of students and it set a tone of bullying that permeated throughout the student body. She threatened students by yelling at them and used public shaming and humiliation to attain desired outcomes.
One of the main bullies in the school was the son of the music teacher. I told my parents about the bullying and they approached the teachers. That particular bully was given preferential treatment in many situations but the overall response from teachers and the administration was disinterest. Disciplinary actions were lax toward certain students whose parents were major donors to the school and the parish.
2) Gossip and nepotism. I recall teachers openly discussing personal issues they knew about student's families and providing students of divorced or less affluent families with less attention and opportunities.
In one incident I witnessed two teachers gossiping about a parent. There were multiple students around when this happened. The two teachers mentioned how the mother of the male student said that, "well my son hit the girl because he sees his father hit me." To my horror, both teachers began to say how they stopped the mother from talking because 'it was none of their business what goes on between you and your husband'. They then began chuckling as they made insensitive comments about the mother and the student that were 100% inappropriate. I looked on OMOS' website and feel it is my right to inform the public that BOTH teachers are still teaching at the school.
While being bullied and learning early on in life that money can buy more than just items at the store, I think I have managed to unlearn most of the negative messages. Parents look elsewhere!
