Great for a splurge
We love Nine Ten and usually go on half price bottle of wine nights on Wednesdays. Their wine list is extensive and almost mind boggling. It's probably the largest I've seen in the area. So it's a great opportunity to try unusual bottles.

We like to sit on the patio. Last time we went with another couple and each ordered the three course menu. I had the braised short ribs with freshly grated truffles on top. OMG. We do consume a decent amount of wine, but none were on the outrageous side price wise. I think the bill was about $200 per couple on half price bottle of wine night. It was totally worth it even though my husband spilled a glass all over his shirt and on the floor. They were nice about the mess.

DO make reservations even if you think it's an off night.

Nine Ten
Came here for lunch with high hopes yet wasn't all to impressed with it. I don't know about their dinner menu but their lunch menu didn't have too many choices....after going over the small selection of items i finally chose a grilled chicken panini. Not bad but the goat cheese with the onions didn't spark my taste buds. Maybe ill give this place another chance for dinner when I visit La Jolla.

Excellent Food, Wine, And Service. At A Price.
My wife and I ate here with friends for the first time last summer and really loved the whole experience.

Everything that everyone at our table ordered was absolutely excellent (and was very well presented on the plates, too), as was the service. We each ordered from the special "Three Course" menu, which was $45 per person (or so) I think. I remember the hamachi sashimi being great, as were the scallops and the short ribs, to name just a few.

The wine was also amazing. One of our friends is a bit of a wine connoisseur, so he did the ordering (multiple bottles over the course of our meal). At the time Nine Ten was offering some sort of wine promotion (maybe half price?), so he ordered pretty expensive wines.

If I remember correctly, our total bill (including tip) was around $450 for the four of us, or just over $200 per couple. Not cheap, for sure. But it really was an excellent meal and worth every penny.

This restaurant is amazing. Let me say that before I get into my experiences with them. The food, atmosphere, service and menus are exceptional. But it took me three visits before I got a meal there. My girlfriend and I were anxious to go and on two separate occasions made reservations. Each time when we arrived we were told that our wait (even with our reservation) would be an hour and fifteen minutes and on our second visit were told our wait would be an hour and forty five minutes! Needless to say we walked out angry both times and swore never to return. It wasn't until a friend of a friend who was a server there invited us to come and dine. Once we did, it was incredible. But I still won't return. I understand it's a popular place but come on......
Pros: Exceptional food, service and atmosphere
Cons: poor business practices

One of La Jolla/San Diego's Finest
We've mostly visited for dinner and have always been impressed with service, fresh seasonal dishes and special offerings like "Mercy of the Chef" menu with wine pairings. Encourage you to try at least once!
