Best banana cake ever.
My first introduction to Michelle Coulon was via tastings for my wedding cake. We had been around town to several of the other big, reputable bakeries and tasted cakes at Michelle Coulon last. Her cakes blew all others out of the water. The price difference was only very slightly higher, if I remember correctly. Totally worth it. I call her if I need to bring desserts and don't have time to bake.

I also suggest you try the mini desserts which are minature versions of her cakes, that are just as moist and delicious. They are bite sized and I think $1.50 per piece. They are perfect for showers and parties. I also have eaten lunch at her bakery and the food is delicious.

Heres what you need to know, however. Her frosting is pure, delicious buttercream. So if you're ordering a cake as a decoration piece for a party, be aware that if it's toasty outside, the frosting will start to soften, as butter does. Still tasty but not ideal when you're not prepared for it. I learned that the hard way once. It did not take away from the awesomeness of the cakes, however.

Once I took in a cute baby shower napkin and they replicated it on the cake. Super impressive.

Tastes better than it looks
Cute little place, nice and quiet, kinda tucked away.

The place itself isn't impressive, and neither is the appearance of the desserts in the case (too much of the typical gold foil, glitter, etc that are all too common these days), but get past all that, because the important thing -- the food -- is really tasty.

Some of the cakes looked a little battle-weary, but at least they're knowledgeable enough to show you the cut side. At Extraordinary Desserts, you'll have to ask for that!

We had way too much food: a mousse with berries, their macaroons, their quiche w/salad, and a slice of a terrific cake with strawberries.

Everything was really tasty, and baked perfectly. Great, fresh flavors.

Service was painfully slow, so get there early!

Desserts for the well to do and those that just want dessert!
This is the best place in La Jolla for dessert period. I think that the only way to decide if this is the best dessert place in San Diego is to put Michele and Karen Krasne in the Iron Chef kitchen and see who reigns supreme. - I will have to be on that judges panel. If you wedding cake budget allows for it, you can't go wrong here - Class and Style with spectacular flavors. Another great thing about MCD is her mini-desserts which are always a hit at our dinner parties or work events when I'm not whipping up something myself. - Seriously I never whip anything up myself.

Great Place for Lunch
Michele Coulon has built a really good reputation for her wedding cakes--she is one of the premier bakers in San Diego. However, this little cafe is a great place for lunch, as well. I love the quaint atmosphere of this place--it's tucked away in a small shopping center, and has a very intimate feeling to it. Their menu is small, but everything is really good. I love their salads and the chicken sandwich, all made with really good, high quality, sustainable ingredients. I like to support restaurants that care about food--serving free range meats and organic produce--this little cafe has been serving such foods for many years. They have a soup du jour, and they are always really delicious. But, my favorite is the french onion, which is also served daily. The mini-cakes are always a delicious way to finish a great lunch. Service is good, and becomes very personal when you are a regular, which is nice. It's a good value for the quality of the food.
