OK Sushi, Poor Service & Management, Bad Ambience--Expensive
I've eaten here several times. I would much rather go somewhere else but if raw fish is calling your name, it is ok in a pinch. Their ambience is horrible. The music is way too loud, almost too loud to carry on a conversation sometimes. I remember one time when they seated us next to some speakers, we really couldn't hear each other, and this was at lunchtime! When I asked the waiter if he could have the music (Japanese Techno??) turned down just a little, he said and I quote:" We could, but we won't" Lovely. So I asked for a quieter spot (I REALLY WANTED THAT SUSHI). He seated us somewhere in the back and that was a little bit better but it was still quite loud.
I don't order many of their rolls or combos because most of them are made with mayonnaise or a sweet sauce or some other unknown sauce. When I once ordered hotategai I thought it would be just the scallops, but it too came out in a sauce, chopped, on top of rice. I guess this is the spicy version. It's not what I ordered but the waiter insisted that I did order that. So, needless to say that in addition to the lacking atmosphere, the servers and management seem haughty & rude. They seem more interested in maintaining a cool, haute cuisine impression, complete with overly decorated plates served by sniffing waiters than they do in just serving great food in a timely manner.
To be fair: they do have a happy hour when it seems just calm enough to handle and some nice specials (ask for no sauce!) Masa Sushi does seem to be on the expensive side, though, so bring plenty of money. I would not recomment the pepper tuna as it seems almost like it's been frozen...it has that super soft, slightly gritty "feel" to it. The snapper and tuna is usually good and the ikura is always good.
If you have the time...there are much better places in Clear Lake.
