Masa Sushi is GREAT

Well I first discovered this place when I had a "hankerin" for some sushi. We stopped in reall quick and plaed a to go order. It took about 10 mins to get this order...but it was worth the wai. The rolled for me buy hand and as i ordered none of this pre-made stuff. It was veeeery good. So I made a mental note and decided to try the dine in expierence ASAP.

My hubby and I went on a Friday night. no reservations no call aheads wejust dropped in. Masa Sushi is in a strip center and this may put some people off at first bcs you would assume that being located there it is a fly by night place but one the doors open and you cross the threshold you are transported to a chic loungish atmosphere that is relaxing and welcoming.

They of course have the some Japanese decor around but it is not alllll over the place or done in a tacky way. The hostess is dress in her regular clothes (drees up very nicely) and the wait staff is dressed in all balck (if i recall correctly)...all look very sharp.

We are quickly welcomed and escorted to our table. They have it set up with tables in the center and the looooong wrap around "booth seating" along the wall and chair across form the booth (So one person is int the booth & the other in a chair).

We were welcomed by our waiter and told of the specials and given time to order. When we ordered this is what we had

Edamame 2.99
House Special Soup 1.50
Rock N Roll 5.50 (Shrip Tampura, Cucmber, Green onion & Avacado)
Spider 6.75 (Soft Shell Crab, cucumber, Green onion & Avacado)
Philadelphia 5.50 (Smoked samon, cream cheese & avacado)
1 more roll i forgot what

Needless to say we were stuuuuuffffffed. We had t take some home. The wait was a little bit lenghty BUT i assure you it was worth the wait. It was not enough to make you never wanna go back. I am thinking it may have just been an off day. i will try again soon and see if that was the case or if this is the norm.

funny thing was that in the background they played classic rock...Bon Jovi and Posion i think heee hee
Jason said it was had an industrial adult feel bcs of the lighting and music.

The magr. Michelle did walk around and greet people but it wasnt like at other places where they just ask"how is everything" you say "oh good" and then off to the next table. During the course of the evening I saw her go to each and everytable and really take soe time and peak and interact with the table of people. She made it seem like she was just there talking not working.

We tried and appitizer and it had a bit too much onion in it and when she came around we were talking and she really took my suggestion into consideration. she compted that portion of the ticket and gave us a little something else as a thank you for our feed back. i would say what the appitizer was till i try it again BCS i think they are REALLLLY on to something and given that change i feel like this could be one of thier great items they are known for Much like the blommin onnion is for Outback...I cant wait to try it again.

So to close I say go go go

PRO's

Something Different
LARGE Variety of foods
GREAT Prices
Great Atmosphere
Plenty of parking
Staff
Michelle the Mngr
Portions are awesome
Qaulity of food is top notch

CONS:

1.)In a strip center (so may turn people off or some may not try it simply bcs they think it is a fly by night place)
2.) Table's (the table booth combo's only) are too close together...PPL next to you know EVERYthing you are talking about

All else is great

Till next time

You can find me here more than once a week!
I have tried several sushi resteraunts and right when I was about to label my self a person that doesn't care for sushi I was introduced to Masa! I would strongly reccomend the Fire roll, Spicy Tuna roll (if you like raw fish) its fresh and has wonderful flavor. Crunchy roll is Great too. Their House soup is great. There is not one thing wrong with this place. I Love it all! I even brought my dad (who refused that he would ever like sushi) and he comes every chance he gets to when he is in town to visit.

Lunch or supper, it is top shelf!!
Masa is hands down the best Sushi and sashimi bar in Houston. If you are in a hurry the menu is quick and easy to find the dishes you like to satify the quick but elgant luch or perfict for a nice night out with a speacial date. I have always found the service impecable and the food to be on another level of freshness and success. I like the original store on EL Comino Real where the ambiance is very inviting and the blue fin tuna is always the best around. You will love it.

Pros: The fresh sashimi is the best. Blue fin tuna on the menu and probably the only place from Japan you will find it.
Cons: The original bistro on El Camino Real is the better choice. BUt the Dickenson store supports a newer environment.

OK Sushi, Poor Service & Management, Bad Ambience--Expensive
I've eaten here several times. I would much rather go somewhere else but if raw fish is calling your name, it is ok in a pinch. Their ambience is horrible. The music is way too loud, almost too loud to carry on a conversation sometimes. I remember one time when they seated us next to some speakers, we really couldn't hear each other, and this was at lunchtime! When I asked the waiter if he could have the music (Japanese Techno??) turned down just a little, he said and I quote:" We could, but we won't" Lovely. So I asked for a quieter spot (I REALLY WANTED THAT SUSHI). He seated us somewhere in the back and that was a little bit better but it was still quite loud.

I don't order many of their rolls or combos because most of them are made with mayonnaise or a sweet sauce or some other unknown sauce. When I once ordered hotategai I thought it would be just the scallops, but it too came out in a sauce, chopped, on top of rice. I guess this is the spicy version. It's not what I ordered but the waiter insisted that I did order that. So, needless to say that in addition to the lacking atmosphere, the servers and management seem haughty & rude. They seem more interested in maintaining a cool, haute cuisine impression, complete with overly decorated plates served by sniffing waiters than they do in just serving great food in a timely manner.

To be fair: they do have a happy hour when it seems just calm enough to handle and some nice specials (ask for no sauce!) Masa Sushi does seem to be on the expensive side, though, so bring plenty of money. I would not recomment the pepper tuna as it seems almost like it's been frozen...it has that super soft, slightly gritty "feel" to it. The snapper and tuna is usually good and the ikura is always good.

If you have the time...there are much better places in Clear Lake.

Worst service ever! dirty sushi bar!!
Do not go to this restaurant, service was horrible!! We had to wait 30minutes for our sashimi, and it wasn't even that busy. The sushi cooks and sushi bar was not clean either. When our tuna sashimi finally arrived, our waitress kept disturbing us and telling us all these stories about how she likes different sushi and sashimi.
Stop talking and let us eat for christ's sake! definitely would not recommend this to my colleagues/friends.
