Looking Glass is a Berkeley Icon
Looking Glass is funky - perhaps the last stand of non-corporate, personal service stores- the sort of service that died in most other stores years ago. They carry all the requisite digital stuff from cheap cameras for your kids to the nearly $8000 Canon 1Ds Mark III and the whole line of Nikon DSLRs and lenses. Excellent supply of inkjet paper, photo paper, bags, film and used film cameras. Decent selection of printers, scanner etc. Reasonable rental department with most of the poplar Nikon and Canon digital SLRs and lenses. The prices are slightly higher than online retailers, but the folks behind the counter are knowledgeable and friendly, so I think it's worth a few extra bucks.

It is a little cramped, and you may have to wait for 5 or 10 minutes on Saturdays, but there's a reason there's a line at Looking Glass - it's the only real camera store in the East Bay, and better vibes than any store in the City, though I suppose Calumet has a better selection of expensive high end gear.

Looking Glass is The Real Deal by Elliott J. at InsiderPages
This place has been around forever, and it looks it. The tiles are broken, the shelves are old. But they carry a good stock of both digital and film stuff - all the Nikon and Canon cameras, lenses and accessories, plus epson printers, and a huge selection of fine art inkjet paper. Huge selection of bags. Decent selection of tripods, lighting - not quite a massive selection, but this place is not very large.

The people behind the counter really care, and know what they're talking about - no condescending looks like from Calumet. Prices are perhaps 5% more than say B&H on some items, but the extra service and see/touch/feel factor makes up for it. I mean, if these guys go out, there will be nowhere to go in the East Bay.

Looking Glass Photo & Camera by Michael N. at InsiderPages
One of the best camera stores in the bay area that holds its character. They have a huge selection of photographic equipment for sale and rent. The prices are reasonable compared to other camera stores around the area. The service can't get any better.

B/W shooter's store by Gloria R. at InsiderPages
Before I switched over to digital photography I used to purchase most of my black and white supplies here at Looking Glass Photo. It's a little drive from the freeway but well worth the trip. They have a wide selection of equipment and supplies here at Looking Glass and the staff is very knowlegeable. I was able to rent out a lens I was wanting to buy here and tested it out a whole day before I went out and bought it.
