Felt like the most important people there!
My husband, 3 year old daughter, and 1 year old daughter ate at Hyman's for the first time today after 7 years of visiting Charleston annually.

We've been missing out!

First of all- we had read about the lines and Hyman's own website advises to come early or late to avoid the wait :) We arrived at quarter to 11 for lunch mid-week and there wasn't a soul waiting. We took the time to look through the General Store (nothing particularly special there- but a good way to pass the time and entertain the kids). The woman working in the General Store was sociable and helpful.

As soon as the restaurant opened we were immediately seated in a great location and even given a convenient place to store our 2 seat stroller.

We had our coupon for our free crab dip- the dip was small, but hey- it was free! The waitress was very helpful and quick to respond to our needs. We asked for extra crackers for our baby to snack on and the waitress quickly brought us some. My drink was 3/4 empty and the waitress replaced it.

I had fried oysters, mahi-mahi with light cajun seasoning, and calamari with cajun mayo. My husband had buffalo shrimp, mahi-mahi with cajun seasoning, and crab cakes. We both thought everything was superb. The kids had a PB&J and a grilled cheese and both had macaroni and cheese for their sides. The mac & cheese was homemade just like my mom used to make- I ate most of my 1 year old's because it was so good!!! They both seemed to like their meals and they were quite large considering the very moderate price for what kid's meals go for these days.

Eli Hyman took the time to come by our table to thank us for coming in and make sure everything was to our liking.

Later he sought out my 3 year old to give her a coupon for a free ice-cream from the general store (and a second one for the baby).

Bottom line- food was fabulous, customer service was fabulous, we were treated just like the VIPs who have been there before us. We'll be back!

Pros: food, service, personal attention
Cons: Tables are particularly small- gets crowded with dishes and hard if you have a baby/toddler who is still grabby

NOT THE #1 RESTAURANT IN CHARLESTON-Ask a local
Anyone can start a campaign to stuff ballot boxes and that's the only way most of the locals I know can figure out that they'd be voted Number One for anything, but litter caused by their handbills and stickers they give to diners, (who leave them on benches and lampposts all over defacing our beautiful public spaces).
Their food is not too bad, but it's FROZEN and definitely not the best in town. There are so many other places that do serve good food like The BoatHouse and Pearlz to name a couple. Ask a local.

Worst seafood in Charleston
Perhaps one of the worst restuarants in the Charleston if not the country. The food is not freash and in some cases down right spoiled. The seafood is not kept on ice and I am surprised most people do not get sick.. If you value your health stay away.

Misconceptions of Hymans,
I had been coming to Charleston on business 2 years in a row and had never visited because of the Humongous line outside each time. I had always been told they are good for seafood but also had some bad reviews from friends.Well, some colleagues were all going there so I decided to do the wait thing with them. Wanting to be non-biased I decided before entering that I'd order all seafood and items that were not breaded (cuz anyone can stick flour on it and fry it) and preferrabley broiled or sauteed.
I had Shrimp Scampi, Bowl of Mussels and Bufalo Oysters (fried oysters are preferred in my book). Scampi and Oysters were really good. The bowl of mussels were awesome...lots of Garlic and Butter throughout...made the order at another raw bar seem dismal at best...this bowl of mussels was big and very flavorful.
My dining experience at Hyman's was pleasureable and I have time to sit and wait, I'll return.
