Howard has one of the best selection of wine around. His store may scare some with cases and bottles all over the place, but don't fret. Just ask the guy at the counter for help. Picked up a 98 single quinta Vintage Port from him for $25, great deal.

Howard is really helpful in picking out your perfect wine, whether it is table wine, big California Cabs, or fine Bordeaux futures. I haven't bought wine anywhere else since I discovered his shop in 2003. Oh, and I love the smell of the wooden crates when I walk in the store.

I knew Howard when he was a wine guy at Sam's many years back and then lost track of him. A few years ago I found his shop and am so glad. Not only is H extremely knowledgeable, but since he has no employees , the customer only deals one-on-one with the expert. Over time he has introduced me to wines I hadn't understood and I have learned the wonders and nuances of red burgundies and Italian barolos as opposed to just living for the big alcoholic California reds. Pricing is very fair, especially considering the expertise that comes with the purchase. The Saturday afternoon free tastings are a great way to experience new wines and hear what H and the distributor have to say about them. The loyalty of his customers speaks volumes about his store and him.

Howard's wine cellar is a small in size but Howard has excellent wine knowledge and a great wine palate. He also has the customer's well being foremost at heart and will recommend good wines for your palate and budget. When I ask for a wine recommendation at a particular price level, he often recommends one for a lower price.

This tiny store is tucked away in a strip mall on Belmont, and it's easy to miss. But Howard has a loyal following, and it makes sense--he knows a ton about wine, and he's happy to help. But he's also happy to let you explore his shop yourself. Many wines are high-priced, but there is a large selection of bottles under $15. Drop in on Saturdays when he has wine tastings.
