i've been taking our cars (subaru and honda) to ed at high tech tire & auto in durham for about a year. we had recently moved to durham, and used car talk's mechanics files tool (http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx) to find a local shop. high tech could not be more convenient (2 blocks from home, and right on a DATA bus stop).

in the 4 or 5 times i've been there in the past year, i've been consistently impressed by the quality of the technicians' work, the knowledge and honesty of ed, and the general environment of the shop. i've lived all over this country and been to a few dozen mechanics - ed's shop is right up there for quality.

i don't always write reviews, but felt compelled to offer an alternative perspective to the review from mary k. i unconditionally recommend high tech tire & auto.

We have taken our cars to Ed at High-Tech Auto for a few years now and highly recommend them. We have had nothing but positive interactions and great service. We've had some significant repairs needed, and some minor issues. Ed has always worked with us both time and budget-wise and we've not had a single problem.

Astonishing cooincidince: I took my car into High Tech Tire to get my tires replaced. Before taking it in, I could not detect any problem with my battery. However, when High Tech called me to tell me the tires were done, they warned me about the battery needing to be replaced. Having had no trouble with the battery, I figured I'd have my regular mechanics check it out when I took the car in for the 60K.

The next day, my car wouldn't start. My battery did not have enough charge to turn over the engine.

The timing of this failure inspired me to reflect on three questions.

I asked myself the question, is it possible to render a battery unable to keep a charge? I discovered claims that it is technically possible to accomplish this.

I asked myself the question, is it possible that checking the health of a battery could inadvertently contribute to the failure of that battery? I did not find any information to answer this question one way or the other.

I then asked myself the question, what are the odds that my battery would fail exactly one day after taking my car into High Tech Tire and Auto, when before taking it to High Tech Tire the battery was able to start the car with no obviously detectable problem?

I leave you with these questions before you take your car into High Tech Tire and Auto.

My insurance company also recommended this company to fix the hail dents in my car from a hail storm in April. I'm glad I went with these nice folks. They fixed it back to the way it was before it was dented just like new -
I was very much impressed with their professionalism and caring attitude when I had my car in to be repaired.
