One of the Top Stringed Instrument Stores...‎
I bought two banjos, an accoustic amplifier, two ukuleles, 2 guitars and a mandolin from Gryphon, not to mention magazines, strings, music stands, a Carlton heavy-duty banjo case, and instructional videos and books, guitar straps, ETC! The employees and ex-employees are excellent musicians and very friendly. I am one of those who feels good the moment I enter. AND each time I have a band from other parts of the US or world here, I give them the treat of a visit, you can sometimes spot very famous musicians hanging out there. My daughter took lessons from Jack Tuttle for years (starting age 8) and she's now a professional musician. They have wonderful workshops and group classes, as well as excellent private instruction. Musicians who stay with me while on tour, if they have a few spare minutes, want to visit or pick up some equipment. Their anniversary parties are FANTASTIC!, They cordon off the street and offer their patrons and the general public some fantastic live music, ...

A Peninsula Institution by Paul C. at InsiderPages
I've had dealings with Gryphon String Instruments for over thirty years. I've bought three banjos and an octave mandolin there, and they have done a few repairs for me at very reasonable cost. There is very little turnover in their staff, which is knowledgeable and friendly. Gryphon has several affiliated music teachers who give private lessons and classes on site, and they occasionally bring in special guests for workshops. I give this shop my highest recommendation.

Not quite accomodating to lower-income...‎
Don't expect much of a deal from this store. 2-day return policy. Because the item I bought was hard-to-find at the time, they didn't even throw in a free pick. The item was also 40 dollars more expensive than every other store. Supply & demand, I suppose. The person who helped me was probably not the brightest with electric components, since he switched the amps standby switch to on and then told me "it's on standby now." Every worker should know that you switch the POWER switch on first to warm up the tubes, then hit the standby to on. This was after asking me "Do you know how to use this?" Maybe an off day... maybe not. I'm sure if you're rich and not sure what you're looking for, I'm sure some sales people will provide great service to help you find what you want. But, if you know what you're looking for, and it IS NOT an instrument, and want to save a few bucks... I'm sorry but online retailers and even other mom & ...

A jewel of a store‎
Tucked away in a residential neighborhood near Frys, which seems like a worlds away, a relatively small store which makes you feel good the moment you enter. It has the old feeling of a non franchised store run by people who care. If you like guitars or any other stringed instrument, you'd love being there. The service is wonderful and their selection is good (from the usual beginners models to a $40K pre war Martin). They have a repair shop on the premises, and a side room for workshops which you can use to play something quietly. Last time I was there, I spent half an hour playing several instruments in a quiet room, with no one bothering me or pressuring me and all the help and insight I could get. How many other stores can give you that?‎
