What you'd expect from a fancy downtown restaurant.
It's not a cheap restaurant. Know that much going in and you'll probably be okay.

Though the service wasn't particularly spectacular, and the wine list included very little under 3 digits, the food was indeed astounding. I got the seared ahi and almost fainted. The wasabi mashed potato side was a fantastic complement (and amazing in and of itself) and I left with little complaint. Except for having to look at the 5'6" 90lb girl as the hostess. Maybe I should have given her some of my mashed potatoes. Actually, na, they were too good to share, anyway.

So, 5 stars - points for bulimic staff = 4 stars. Not bad.

Greyston The Steakhouse - They Read Minds
My husband and I celebrated our 12-year anniversary of our first meeting at Greystone in the Gaslamp area, San Diego. As you enter the restaurant, there is a grand staircase that leads you to the second floor seating area. The fixtures and decor remind me of the old Hollywood (as I have seen in photos). The hostess led us up the stairs to a table overlooking the whole restaurant. There was a beautiful huge fire place on one end of the room and a case of wine bottle on another wall.

Our waiter brought us our menus with a smile. We ordered the New York Strip Steak, broccoli and asparagus. As we waited for the food, our waiter checked on us periodically. At one point I thought he read my mind because he came over and informed us that our meal will take a little while because we had ordered our steaks medium well. I was just thinking that our order was taking a bit longer than I expected. Well, I'm glad someone was listening... ha ha...

Our steaks were delivered by another waiter; I asked him for some steak sauce. Our waiter then checked in on us and asked if there was anything else we needed. I did mention to him that I had requested for some steak sauce. Five minutes had gone by and...no steak sauce. I caught the eye of our waiter who hurried over and asked if I received my steak sauce. Hmmm...did he read my mind again? I thought to myself, "I just better be careful what I think about."

Our overall experience was great. The desert menu looked scrumptious but we were eying Ghirardelli's across the street; maybe next time. I wonder if he read that.

Just OK
Went here based on the excellent reviews it's received here. Have to say that it lived up to them in some respects, fell short in others. The food was good to very good. I don't often mention specific dishes but I think I need to explain. My wife and I went here for our anniversary. We started with the tomato and onion salad with bleu cheese - very good - and the shrimp and lobster bisque - also very good. For a main course I ordered the elk (and my wife had the lobster risotto. The elk was very good but I wished I had gotten the rib-eye (my steak house standard). My wife's risotto was very disappointing. It was really more like Spanish rice with lobster (lots of lobster but I'd kind of expect that since the dish was about $40). The rice they used looked like a long grain rice - not the standard short grain (Aborio) and wasn't creamy at all. For dessert we had the pistachio ice cream - really tasty and a flourless chocolate cake - OK. Now, here's where the service comes in. It was very, very good. We sent the risotto back and within two minutes the manager was there. He apologized, said he'd take it off the bill and buy us a couple of desserts as well as offering another dish. The waiter was very good too and got us a nice wine recommendation.
