We found out about Garden Oaks from the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Houston, which is a truly wonderful nonprofit run by volunteers from the Unitarian church on Wirt. The FCA surveys funeral homes for their prices, since the price charged by funeral homes varies WIDELY, and few people are in a state of mind to "shop around" at such a grief-ridden time. They also have resources for advance planning, links for organ donation, and other considerations. http://www.funeralconsumershouston.org/ We used Garden Oaks to cremate my mother and my aunt, and we're returning today to make plans for my uncle who just passed away. They are very matter-of-fact, not big into the condolence business, which was fine with us - but I have found the owner, Charles, respectful and helpful. We were not interested in a service provided by them, since we have our own church. They have been expert in providing the service we needed, and with quiet reserve.
