Times Are Changing
Most of what everyone has had to say about this place is true. Gringos is in a great location (just a block from the beach) and the decor/ambiance is really unique. In the past, however, I have always thought the menu was lacking in variety and flavor, consisting of only the most basic and boring Mexican dishes. The margarita selection is quite impressive but they aren't strong enough to keep me coming back. The real competitive advantage this restaurant has always boasted - the sole reason I consider eating at this place - is their signature green chili queso dip. It is complementary along with spicy, authentic salsa and a basket of chips (I eat at least two servings of it every time I'm here). But alas, the last time I went to Gringos, to my great dismay, no one placed a dish of delectable queso dip on my table. Instead, a dish of salsa verde (which was mediocre) and a dish of overly-spicy, watered-down red salsa stared me in the face. When I mention to my server the void that had quickly formed within my soul and my appetite, he informed me that they completely revamped their menu and no longer offer the pale, heaven-sent concoction! Sure enough, the menu was completely different. In fact, the food selection was much better - they now offer more of a variety and more interesting dishes. Also, the prices are much more reasonable. I left with a full belly and a full wallet, but does this new menu justify the loss of my beloved queso dip? I don't know for sure but what I do know that I need some time to heal before I return.
