Didn't capture my heart
I went to Echo for the first time on Valentine's Day. During my first few minutes there, I was pleased with the well-designed space and a friendly greeter. The menu was different for the holiday, but the waitress did not explain how it worked or give us much indication of what was good even when we asked, (perhaps our later reservation meant she was tired???) While my dinner was unique and flavorful, my husband's was not. The drafty and cold room meant that I had to wear my coat the whole time. A good sized insect was in my drink, some of the plates were dirty, and although the plates and silverware were eclectic, they were obviously cheap. With prices like this, I feel like I should be paying for an experience, not just good food. Probably would not go back.

Worth a try
When I walked in I was quite surprised and pleased at the candle lit, vintage, artsy atmosphere (although it is a lot smaller than I had expected). I tried their "Dark & Stormy" and loved it! One downside was we came early when it was quiet and got a nice table but were later asked to move to a two person table to make room for others. One waitress was very sweet (the one with the awesome tatoo) the other seemed quite snooty but didn't ruin the evening. It was fun to discover the water was cucumber flavored. A bit of a shock but not a bad one. Also I couldn't help but notice that even though the place was packed, my husband was one of two men in the entire place. The food was good! Don't expect a lot though. I ordered the ribs and they were so great we shared them. All in all it is definately worth trying at least once.

Fabulous find!
I'd heard so much about Echo from colleagues since moving to Portland that I just had to go. The atmosphere was perfect - low light, comfortable-sized booths and tables, undistracting music and an awesome lantern hanging in the window. We opted for the bar seating and had a great evening of drinks (mmmm dark & stormy) and appetizers (hummus was terrific). I had the soup special that was fantastic, as well as a salad that was a good balance of hearty ingredients and dressing. It's unfortunate that so many other places get a salad so wrong. My husband had the salmon option that was good; the potatoes were to die for. We enjoyed the hum around the bar, as well as the attentive (but not too attentive) bartender. It was just a really good vibe and experience. Price was right on too. Parking lot was full, but I don't see that as a terrible sign! If you haven't already, you should definitely try it.

Great food, beautiful environment!
Have had mixed experiences in the past, but revisiting Echo after almost a year I'm much more impressed. The entree selection is great, had a fully enjoyable meal. Drinks were great. Music was strange, but enjoyable enough- bartender sure seemed to enjoy himself- maybe a little too much? Service was timely and friendly.
Menu is a little confusing... not sure if sandwiches are available at dinner or if that's their after hours menu?
