Is it historic? Yes. Is it haunted? Yes. When you enter the lobby you are in the midst of high-tone Texas history. Walk across the marble floor and up the stairs to the great piano bar and sit under the stuffed longhorn steer head. Listen to the great live jazz on Friday and Saturday night - usually George Oldziey on piano with Suzie Stern singing. Ask her to sing "peel me a grape." You will find tall Texas tales and big business deals (which might be the same thing) happening all around you. Hang your hat at the Driskill and you'll be in the middle of all things downtown and comfortable to boot. My mother stayed here and loved every minute of it.
Pros : Central location, city landmark, rich history, the Driskill Grill is a mighty fine restaurant featuring an inventive menu of American food. I don't usually talk Texan but the Driskill brings it out in anyone.
Cons : Can be full sometimes during University of Texas events. Reserve your room as early as possible, especially if you want the one that's haunted.
