Found and Fixed My Check Engine Light Problem
Had a check engine light in my work truck so decided it was time to find out why and deal with the problem as my truck needed a smog check to renew the registration. Didn't really know what to expect, but figured it would be expensive and I've been putting it off, so I went in expecting the worst.
They scanned my truck and it turned out the code was for emissions, and Donnie mentioned that it was probably due to the locking gas cap I had not sealing correctly as it didn't seem to him to fit right (and he didn't see/find anything else). Donnie didn't have a replacement on hand, then told me he could order one from a local parts store and have it delivered or I could go pick it up myself (even gave me directions to AutoZone and Napa and said both should have it). Best part, not only did he spot the problem, and give me choices to save me money, but he also recommended that I get a regular gas cap as the locking type are known to cause problems after a few months of use.
Got my truck smogged today (with the regular style gas cap), and it passed! Nice way to finish up a week... truck is now registered for another year, and I found a mechanic that knows what he's doing and doesn't charge an arm and a leg marking up parts. Probably will need to have the brakes done in the near future, and I'll take my truck back to Donnie's Auto Clinic.
