I used to shop at Astor Place wines, where the selection was impressive but I never found the staff to be particularly pleasant (the folks that do tastings are very friendly and knowledgeable, but I found the check out staff - and their Duane Reed- like barks of "NEXT" - rude.) I moved a few blocks east and Discovery Wines is now my go-to place. I love it! The staff is warm, friendly and informed - not pretentious. I told man there that I was looking for a cheap wine to cook with, and he was still happy to help me make a selection, even knowing I was in the market for a $6.99 bottle. I'm glad this place is on my block!‎
