Great Value And High Quality, But A Parody Of Itself Nonetheless
When I was in high school 25 years ago, this "Costco" was a "Price Club." I could see it from the freeway as we drove by. But since my parents weren't members, I was left to wonder what really went on in there.
This "Coscto" is more popular and 'famous,' I think, than that old "Price Club" ever was. And since my wife's family have been "Costco" members for years, I was finally able to see what goes on inside.
In my mind, it pretty much lives up to all the stereotypes about "warehouse stores," both good and bad. The building itself is absolutely cavernous. And while the parking lot outside is huge, it can nonetheless be hard to get a parking space at popular times (especially on weekends).
The whole place is a little overwhelming at first. But after I went here a few times I came to sort of know my way around. Because my family is small (we have just one young daughter), we don't have the need to buy everything in such great bulk. But for things like toilet paper, and soda, and canned soups, it's great for us.
I was also surprised by how excellent their meat department is, as well as their produce. And their wine selection also surprised me, both for its variety and it's quality (as well as price).
We don't tend to buy much of their pre-made foods in the refrigerated section, or their frozen foods (like those huge bags of 50 hamburger patties or boxes of 100 egg rolls). We also don't buy those huge vats of mustard and giant jars of pickles that look like they're intended for restaurant kitchens. (Who needs that much mayo?)
I also appreciate that the check-out process is pretty quick here, despite the fact that every customer is pushing a huge cart crammed with a plethora gigantic items. If you look back from the array of cash registers at the front, the other customers almost look like zombies as they slowly, inexorably push their oversized carts forward through the wide aisles, stopping only periodically to wordlessly accept the free samples being handed out throughout the store.
