Goes smoothly if YOU have all your ducks...‎
My experience overall went fairly smoothly, but not without undue stress. Applied for a student summer study visa, and there's a very specific long list of official documents required. Luckily the school i was going with had some prior experience and was well prepared with their documents. This could have gone very differently if I was managing the whole document collection process myself (some in Italian). Definitely apply for an interview MONTHS in advance especially if traveling in summer months and if you are coordinating any of the documents for your school (ie: financial aid letters, bank letters, registration confirmation, official transcripts with sealed envelope, letters from program coordinators - originals from italy take about a wk!).‎

ROFL‎
Dude, why do you guys need a visa for Italy so bad? Just go! You don't need a visa for tourism. And if you are going to be a student or for work, you can get the stuff done once you are in Italy at the city hall or police station...like...seriously. By the way, i went to one of their coktail parties to network, and yes, they are sooo fucking rude even outside of the office. The employees get paid $40 the hour to sit on a chair in front of a computer...I WANT THAT JOB NOW! LOL‎

Terrible service if not service at all‎
How can the Italian Consulate in NY be so bad? I don't understand how these people can be employed. They never pick up the phone and when they do, they are rude, abnoxious and don't know what they are talking about. We are dealing with ignorant idiots here. How can this office stay "open".‎

Key is to have all paper work done!‎
The visa appointment at Consulate General of Italy, New York went pretty smoothly for me and my husband. The first few things that the security officer asked to present on entering were Application Form, Print of Confirmation of Appointment and Passport. The Visa Officer also asked for Application form (which was to be filled, signed and have photograph (35mmx45mm) attached beforehand). Then, she asked for what kind of Visa are you applying for. We applied for tourist visa. We were asked to present the following documents - 1. Copy of Passport (all pages) 2. Print of airline tickets (return trip) - make sure tickets contain Confirmation Number or e-ticket numbers printed clearly along with each traveler's name 3. Hotel confirmation letter (either received by Mail or Fax from Italy) - Ensure the confirmation number is mentioned on the hotel letter, also the name of the travelers. The copy of Expedia itinerary or any other such sites are not acceptable. 4. Letter issued by the ...
