Last Man Standing
There's been a comic book store at this location going back to the mid-1980s. Back then it was part of a local chain that even advertised on TV during weekday afternoon cartoons. Over the last 25 years, however, comic books in general seem to have declined greatly in popularity, especially among kids. As a result, all of the other local comic book stores that I used to go to as a kid have long since gone out of business . So I was really happy to see that this one remained. The Last Man Standing.
Admittedly, it is a shadow of its former self. It's tucked away in a dingy old strip mall next to a pool supply place and a sewing place. In the old days, a grocery store anchored this mall (an Albertsons, I think). But that, too, long since closed now.
Last year I started dropping by here every couple of months to pick up a few of the comics books I liked as a kid that are still published today. I thought that this store had an excellent assortment of new comics, as well as a significant selection of back issues. There was also a huge selection of Trade Paperbacks (or, "TPBs"), as well as action figures and statues, and even Dungeons & Dragons stuff. In fact, more than half the store seemed to be devoted now to stuff other than comic books.
I always found the staff to be very friendly here, contrary to another negative review posted here. No one ever hovered over me while I looked around. Though I was never in there for more than 10 minutes or so.
A few months ago I went in again and the clerk informed me apologetically that they were no longer going to carry new comic books every month. They would instead focus exclusively on their other lines, like action figures and TPBs.
I don't have much reason to go in there anymore as a result, and haven't been back. But if I wanted something they sold, I wouldn't hesitate to go back, in part because I thought the staff was very friendly, but also for old times' sake.
