Canterbury Not Many Places Like It Anymore
I cannot be as harsh as a previous reviewer regarding Canterbury Records. They offer for me a great assortment of cd's of artists from the 40's and 50's like Joni James and Eddie Fisher that I absolutely
love. But, I will agree totally that the dismissing of employees J & R is devastating. I would wait mostly
to buy my recordings from "R" who was warm and always helpful whether I made a purchase or not. I
will continue to buy from Canterbury as there are not many local places like it anymore, but it will not be
the same without the employees mentioned above. It just will not be the same.

Cantebury Records has Changed
As I visited Cantebury Records yesterday I was appalled that the two normal staff that I had come to know, rely on and love as friends for 30 years had been let go "at will". In there place were two older women with severe attitude problems and a man supposedly the owner who could care less how the women were acting. I tried to get some help, with out success, and left buying nothing. They do not seem to be getting any of the new releases, nor will they special order anymore. Their prices have gone up 10-13%. This a.m. I called all of the people I had given gift certificates to for Christmas, and suggested that they hurry in to spend them, since new stuff is no longer coming in.

I am deeply saddened that J and R were let go, since they were Cantebury Records. I will be going to Amazon, Target and Walmart in the future.

Rare finds all the time and black licorice to boot...
There are two specific times that I come to Canterbury's though you can stop in at anytime and find that you've fallen through some kind of musical time portal. As a composer, inspiration is a must and there are times I've just got to find that album that has that song that's been stuck in my head, but is not in my colletion. Have them look it up, find it, order it and call you when it comes in from a domestic distributor or overseas be it CD, LP, TC (Tape cassette - for you oldies like me - Ahhh...sweet fidelity hisssss). The other time is when I just have a penchant to stop in and browse the LP's stacked under the close rows of tables. Not kept in the best condition, but there are tons of the big black wax "CD's". My greatest finds in that area have been and original ROCKY LP soundtrack, several Audio Instructions records (great for non-sequitur inserts in my Hip-Hop originals), A Sting LP, and a few gifts of old time LP music that made the recipients smile like it was Christmas morning. Service was always very friendly, but can be a touch lengthy at times, which is a matter of concern in that small space, but you feel like you're walking out with a pirates bounty of music. I knew a guy, before he relocated, who even ran his Ebay business using them as his "secret" main supplier of rare LP's as his combined the aisle's looking for that buired treasure. Love this place. Lot's of current releases, plus the stuff you won't find anywhere else. {(-_-)} xSUBn

You want it? They got it by amanda s. at InsiderPages
This record shop, independently owned and operated, is a welcome blessing in the sea of corporate everywheres. As any old record store MUST be in order to be authentic, it is musty and dusty but EXCELLENT. I guess what makes this place stand out so clearly and continue to thrive is that the staff here know absolutlely everything about music. Obscure stuff. Stuff you thought you were the only one who knew about. They know more. They probably even know the band and hang out with them. Maybe if you shop here enough they'll let you come too. Amazing jazz and classical sections. A must must must.

User review by ed390
Until this morning, Canterbury Records had been my cherished neighborhood music shop. I liked the 70s vibe, and I liked supporting an independent business. Alas, when I purchased a new CD that was doubly defective, Canterburys owner began making a devastating, if inadvertent case for Tower and the Apple Music Store. The CD booklet was badly notched from the cutting machine. The disc played fine on my stereo, but wouldnt download onto an iPod. After a three second inspection, the owner determined that the CDs defects came not from the manufacturing or packaging process, but from me. He pronounced that there wasnt anything he could do, although, of course, he was sole proprietor here. Almost out the door, I told him that, though Id spent many hundreds at Canterbury over the years, hed never see me again. His smug reply: We appreciate your business in the past. Apparently, not enough.
