Best Book Franchise Ever
Forget Borders and the rest, B&N beats them all hands down. Complete with a Starbucks and every conceievable book you would ever want (if they don't have it, they'll order it), it's right there. Their selections are impeccable. The staff is usually very willing to help. All in all, they have what you need and want concerning books.

Great atmosphere and great speakers by Kiran M. at InsiderPages
The Barnes and Noble located on the north side of Union Square takes up several floors, and each floor has something fun to offer. The space is big and bright, and the shelves are spaced out and there's intermittent open parts with tables to keep from seeming claustrophobic.

Everywhere there are places where you can sit (even if it's on the floor, which is very clean and welcoming) and flip through the book before you buy it. There are couches here and there. There's also a Starbucks on the premises, and you can actually sit at a table and read there, but you will be asked to buy something.

Escalators carry customers up and down, and at the foot and the top of each stretch of elevator there is a sign telling you what you can find on each floor. If you still have trouble finding your way around, there are helpful workers everywhere and computer stations where they can check where to find a certain book. There are usually at least half a dozen registers open, so even if there's a line, it always moves very quickly.

The bookstore also hosts many speakers promoting their new book, such as Ralph Nader. The stage and podium is usually set up right on the floor of the bookstore, and the sound system is very nice and carries the speaker all over the big bookstore.

PROS: Bright, helpful staff, great selection, lines move quickly

Perfect for Union Square by Andrew G. at InsiderPages
This Barnes and Noble fits its environment well. Not so much the perfect place to buy books, as there are plenty of other book stores and even B&Ns in the area, this place always seems to have events and readings, and they have the whole coffee shop and reading area thing going on too. This place, like Union Square, is more about college students hanging out than about books, which makes it different in a good way.

B&N Union Square by A M. at InsiderPages
I think the Union Square Barnes and Noble is a decent chain location, but there are better choices within walking distance--with better bargains and more quiet. While their stock is pretty extensive (including a nice video/dvd and music selection in addition to books, for one stop shopping), it's hard to find rare or specialty selections. I also feel this store is too crowded to ever really enjoy browsing through book selections.

It is worth it to watch their upcoming events, though, as this B&N location seems to have the most worthwhile programs and author guests.

Greatest book store by Gianna D. at InsiderPages
I love this book store. I could spend the whole day there. It's so big that it must have almost every book ever printed. You can find books on any subject here. The coffee shop is great because you can sit and take you time and look through the books and just relax. I often come here on my lunch hour or after work just to have a cup of coffee, read a book or magazine, and unwind before I have to commute home. The staff is extremely helpful and will help you find any book you want. I wouldn't go to any other book store.
