I heard about Baby Cakes from a friend. They were supposedly this super cool, boutique bakery specializing in high end, custom deserts and cakes. Which they definitely do. I ordered a custom chocolate birthday cake that came out superb. It was a piece of art! When I went to pick the cake up I realized it's more than just a boutique bakery, it's a really cool coffee shop in Hillcrest with a cool indoor and outdoor setting. The staff was super nice, friendly and helpful. If you need a special cake, this is the place to go in SD.

So 4 stars for this place... My homies and I came here cuz a friend was pimpin this place out to a bunch of chicks on his facebook saying he'll take them there after a date. Blah blah [never gonna happen] cough. Anyways, we were in North Park and I was still hungry after visiting a friend and I said why the hell not.

The only reason I would deduct a star off is because the cake was kinda dry but overall, it was pretty good. I had the "mint marble" cake. If you're a fan of mint ice cream... it tastes exactly like that. One of my biggest gripes is that they overload it with frosting, which is never a good thing. The frosting amount was right on. Also I believe its a buttercream versus cream-cheese based. The "pommy" cake kinda tasted familiar, like I had it before. Oh wait, it tasted like cupcakes you get from Albertsons or Food For Less. Sorry but true. So go with the mint marble.

Babycakes is an urban meeting place with incredible food and presentation. The specialty cupcakes include Red Velvet, which is the best you have ever tasted! They are opening Baby's Bar to the public this summer for cocktails and cupcakes. Since they are in Hillcrest, they draw big crowds during Gay Pride weekend and CityFest. They have a very large area inside and a garden patio, so perfect for holding parties, fundraisers - or just meeting a client there for a short discussion. In addition to cupcakes, they have stuffed croissants, quiche, and fresh fruit bowls. The café will soon be offering Lunch 7 days a week and Brunch on the weekends. They also do custom wedding cakes that are amazing!

Babycakes offers really great cupcakes and coffees. They also serve brunch. Their employees are super nice and have great outdoor seating. They have limited parking so be prepared to look for parking if you don't get lucky.
