Sugarloaf is a subdivision within the Laurelwood neighborhood of San Mateo. It is one of the newest neighborhoods and lies in the westernmost quadrant of the city. Homes in the Sugarloaf subdivision are deemed to be of high value, with homes having open floor plans, such as found in the Sugarloaf tract style homes, being the most popular. This affluent community spans a 2.2 square mile area with just over 10,000 residents, making it one of San Mateo's most populated neighborhoods. Within the Sugarloaf boundary is the San Mateo Medical Center and the vast Laurelwood Park. Demographically speaking, the population here is predominately white, followed by Asians. The neighborhood features small and medium enterprises, banks, and other service-oriented businesses like hotels and restaurants. Most of the residents in the area are homeowners as opposed to renters.
