very friendly, great with dogs
I've been going to Dr John with my two dogs for 12 years now. They are great dogs, annual check ups, emergency call from Mexico, even a torn ACL surgery.‎

Best Vet!!!!
We've been patients of the Animal Hospital of La Jolla since we moved to La Jolla from Ohio 3 years ago, and we could not be happier. Our pets are one of the biggest parts of our lives, and the care we have received from Dr. John, and occasionally Dr. Sue has been superlative. Our cat and one of our dogs are geriatric and already had a lot of problems when we got here. Dr. John has provided us with cost effective and reasonable programs to manage these conditions, and I can truthfully say these 2 are in better shape today than when we got here 3 years ago. They really care and they both are great vets. Recommended highly.‎

This Hospital saved my dog's life
We are long-time patients of Drs. Sue and John. We had a 14-year old Maltese who had torn her ACL. They performed surgery on her. It was flawless. Because of their kind, caring and excellent treatment, our dog lived another 2 years, to age 16. Dr. Sue has called us at 9:00 at night to check on post treatment progress. She explains every situation and treatment option in understandable terms. We now have a rescued Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who was both abused and neglected in his first home. As a result, he has numerous health issues (spinal, skin, delicate stomach, etc.). I could not imagine bringing him to anyone else. We have moved 20 miles away, but still return to Drs. Sue and John for treatment. Speaking from more than 15 years experience, this is an excellent practice.‎

Awful practice!...
I brought my cat here for a routine checkup and vaccine. I had brought him in a hard carrier. The woman that administered the shots and weighed him did not ask me to get him from the carrier or even try to get him out, she just turned the carrier over and dropped him on his head. They then proceeded to give my cat a one year rabies shot because they do not give cats the 3 year vaccine but they will not tell you that so you have to go back every year to get the booster, rather than every three years. I would tell anyone to stay away from this place. Overpriced and unprofessional... there are much better vets in La Jolla.‎

Rude Vets, scary treatments
I took my dog in a few months ago for a broken nail. Dr. John said he would get the nail trimmed back and that I should wait out front. I heard a huge yelp and in a few minutes was let back to the room, to find them cleaning up blood from everywhere and my dog looking terrified with a huge bandage on his foot. They said they had needed to use a turniquet and that the bandage would need to stay on for the week. I also noticed that hair from his tail was caught in one of the leash cleats. My usually calm therapy dog was an emotional mess and in a lot of pain. While they were finishing up, I asked the vet about my dog's 1 lb weight gain (first change in 4 years), and said that I hadn't changed his feeding, to which Dr. John chewed me out about how "sick and tired" he was of owners saying their dogs "didn't eat that much" - this while my dog and I were already stressed out! (turned out it was a weighing mistake and he hadn't gained an ounce, btw). I ...
