Blastomycosis Diagnosis and Treatment
I took my 9 month old German Shepherd to Alpine Pet Care Center because he'd been eating less and less until he refused to eat altogether. He'd steadily lost weight from over 90 lbs, down to a mere 69 lbs. He also had a large lump form on the front of his left front ankle, which he began licking incessantly. Dr. Gorham took x-rays and told me that he thought he had something called blastomycosis, but because he had clear lungs on the x-ray, that it would be best to get another opinion, so we sent them to the University Of Georgia Veterinary College for evaluation. They actually made a diagnosis of cancer, and recommended taking him to a canine cancer specialist. Instead of doing so, Dr. Gorham recommended that we first attempt a treatment for blastomycosis, because he had a hunch that it was the real culprit, and if that didn't help, then we could go further with the specialist. He prescribed medication that we purchased at our local pharmacy, and within a few days, Jett began eating again. Within a few weeks he was getting back to his old self again, although it took approximately 6 months before he was fully cured and the lump on his leg was completely gone. The medicine was expensive, $20 per day for 6 months, but it was well worth it. Jett is the best natured, most lovable, and smartest German Shepherd that we've ever owned, and thanks to Dr. Gorham, he's as healthy and happy as a dog can be. Once he couldn't muster the energy to lift his head to eat, and now he literally runs our 2+ acres night and day. For a 110 lb dog, he has the energy of a young puppy, although he now is more than 6 years old, that's speaks volumes. Since the time of his illness, I've heard of many dogs that have contracted Blastomycosis, all who have died from it. I would highly recommend Alpine Pet Care for anything that concerns you about your pet. They're very thorough and care as much about the well being of your pet as you do. Although it's a little belated, I'd like to say once again, Thank You Dr. Gorham.
